Mozilla forays into the Mobile OS segment with its new Firefox OS. Fostered by Mozilla's Boot to Gecko (B2G) project, Firefox OS is built entirely using HTML5 and other open Web standards. It uses a Linux kernel and boots into a Gecko-based runtime engine that runs application developed using HTML, JavaScript, and other open web standards.

Features of Firefox OS:


1. Device compatibility:
Since Firefox OS is developed using HTML5 and other open Web standards, it is compatible with any devices. Mozilla demonstrated a sneak preview of the software by running Firefox OS on Samsung Galaxy S II Smartphone instead of the Android OS.

2.Performance:
In Firefox OS, HTML5 apps uses JavaScript to communicate with the hardware. This in turn requires minimum resource and increases the performance of the device with greater stability and speed.

3.User Interface:
The user interface in Firefox OS is very friendly and easy to understand. The notification bar at the top alerts user about battery status, connectivity and other notifications. Important apps can be pinned to the bottom of the home screen for easy access.

4.Hardware requirements:
Firefox OS uses open web technologies and JavaScript, which consumes less resource. It can deliver optimum performance even on low spec hardware configurations.

5.App development:
It is easier to develop apps for Firefox OS as it is built entirely on open web standards. HTML5 apps can be easily ported to the Firefox OS.

6.Cost:
Since the Firefox OS consume less resource, the hardware cost is drastically reduced. The Smartphones running Firefox OS will be much cheaper that the one running on other platforms.

7.Security:
Firefox OS is based on multi-layered security model. It minimizes the exploitation risks at every level itself and provides comprehensive protection against threats.

8.Open platform:
Like other Mozilla products, Firefox OS is an open platform. The codes are available in the public domain and anyone can contribute to its development.

9.Customizable:
Firefox OS is fully customizable. A user familiar with Linux and HTML5 can customize it to their requirement.

10.Firefox Marketplace:
Firefox Marketplace offer apps in various categories like games, business, news and so on. Web developers can create and distribute their HTML5 apps via the Marketplace. Many popular apps like Facebook, Twitter, Disney Mobile Games, EA games, SoundCloud and much more are also included.

Currently Mobile OS is dominated by Google's Android and Apple's iOS, which together hold 85% of the market share. When Google's next Android version - the Key Lime Pie is rumored to be around the corner, the launch of Firefox OS has further intensified the battle for supremacy.
