Microsoft is developing a new lineup of its Surface tablets. Citing people familiar with the company's plans, the Wall Street Journal has reported that the new line-up will also include a 7-inch version and is expected to go into mass production later this year.

The growing popularity of smaller tablets like the Nexus 7 and the iPad Mini made Microsoft to foray into the 7-inch segment, which weren't part of the company's strategy last year. According to research firm IDC, nearly half the tablet shipped in the fourth quarter belongs to this segment.

Last year, Microsoft debuted its latest operating software - Windows 8. The company has also unveiled a 10-inch tablet running Windows 8 OS. But it was not able to gain significant market share, as the tablet market is dominated by Google's Android and Apple iOS.

However, Microsoft declined to comment on this development.
