Google has finally unveiled a unified messaging service called as 'Google hangouts' at Google I/O developer’s conference. It was earlier rumored as Google Babel. The new app replaces all the existing messaging services like Gtalk, Google+ Messenger and Google+ Hangout video chat.

Unlike other messaging services, the Hangouts app displays a list of recent conversations on the main screen instead of the traditional contact list. Each conversation can have its own name and can be assigned with an icon. All the Hangouts conversations are logged in Google's cloud and can be viewed at convenience. It also supports video calling with up to 10 participants just like the preceding Google+ Hangouts apps.

The new Google Hangouts app is available on all platforms like Android, iOS and desktop using Chrome extension. The Android app works on Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) and above, while the iOS app works on iOS 6.1 and above.
