Microsoft will debut its Windows 8.1 operating system at the Microsoft Build Developer Conference, San Francisco in June. There were several rumors floating around regarding the new features that Windows 8.1 would bring. Microsoft has now officially announced some of the new features and changes that will appear in Windows 8.1 operating system.

Codenamed 'Windows Blue', Windows 8.1 will be the first major upgrade to the Windows 8. Microsoft, in addition to customer feedback, has added many new features and functionality that enhances the touch experience and mobile computing’s potential.

Windows 8.1 New Features and Changes:


1. Start Button

Microsoft Windows 8.1 would bring back the 'start' button that was available in the previous versions of Windows. The Start screen tip in the bottom left-hand corner will be replaced by the Windows Logo that takes the user straight to a grid of applications.

2. Lock screen

The Windows 8.1 allow users to turn their PC or tablet into a picture frame by displaying a slide show of images that is stored locally or in the SkyDrive cloud. In addition, it also allows users to take pictures from the lock screen using the built-in camera without having to log into the device.

3. Desktop background

Microsoft Windows 8.1 will offer more colors and backgrounds for the Start screen, which also include animated ones. Users can also set their desktop background as their Start screen background.

4. Tiles

Microsoft Windows 8.1 would feature different tile sizes including a new large and new smaller size. It also allows selecting multiple apps at the same time and resizing, uninstalling or rearranging them. In order to prevent accidental movement of tiles, Windows 8.1 users will have to press and hold or right click to move tiles around. It is also possible to view all apps by just swiping from the bottom of the screen.

5. Enhanced Search

Microsoft Windows 8.1 search will be powered by Bing, it provides global search results in a rich, simple-to-read, aggregated view from many content sources. The search will also suggest Quick actions that users would want to take like play a song or video.

6. Improved Apps and Windows Store

Microsoft will be updating all the built in apps that come with Windows 8 for Windows 8.1 OS. The company also promises to introduce some brand new apps shortly. Users will be able resize apps to any size, share the screen between two apps, or have up to three apps on each screen if multiple displays are connected.

Microsoft is also improving its Windows Store in Windows 8.1 to show more information with detailed lists of the top free apps, new releases, and picks on the home page.

7. Cloud Connectivity

The Windows 8.1 allow users to directly save their files to SkyDrive. Microsoft will also introduce a new SkyDrive app that allows offline access to files.

8. PC Settings

With the improved PC Settings, Users will now be able to change their display resolution, set power options, see the make and model of the device, change product key, update Windows Update, and join domains directly from PC Settings without having to go to the Control Panel on the desktop.

9. Internet Explorer 11

Microsoft Windows 8.1 will debut a new version of the Internet Explorer web browser. Internet Explorer 11 will offer better touch performance, faster page load times and several other new features. It also allows users to open unlimited number of tabs at the same time. Open Tabs can also be synced across the other Windows 8.1 devices.

10. Mouse and Keyboard friendly

Windows 8 OS is designed for touch screen devices, but there are many non-touch devices in use today. In order to ensure easier navigation, Windows 8.1 comes with a number of improvements for people using a mouse and keyboard.
